A Kid's Perspective

The Kaehler and Hawthorn(thwaite) families spent many memorable times together. From Christmas and Easter celebrations to camping adventures, there was never a dull moment.  My fondest memories are of hikes and campfires while camping at Killarney or Killbear and cross country skiing on Sunday afternoons.  On any given hike, the gang would surely start to sing the A&W Song (you know - the one with the bear in the commercial - are you singing it in your head??)  Anyway, Uncle Wally usually lead the pack and would pull pranks and jokes on the rest of us.  He would walk down a small hill but exaggerate its steepness by crouching down.  The kids would rush over the hill only to see him sitting on the ground laughing as we caught up to him.  Another story revolves around the lantern and the campfire.  Aunt Joan sometimes liked the lantern on in the background of the campsite so the kids could see what they were doing or where they were walking, but Uncle Wally loved the darkness with the fire glowing. Joan would turn the lantern on and just nicely get seated at the fire when Wally would get up for a beverage and turn the lantern off.  The cycle played over and over until one of them would give up.  Cross country skiing was always an adventure and you know with this group the wine flask was full.  Great memories.
