Big Sister Betty

Betty had much practice being a mother as she helped care for the younger siblings, teaching us songs, stories, how to work, gardening. Often she played school with some of us, teaching us German. For Christmas she would improvise gifts by painting lovely pictures on cardboard, since we were poor in those days. On Christmas morning she would line us up on the stairs, according to age, so that we could enter the living room where Mom & Dad waited with the lighted tree, gifts and candies. We would sing "O du frohliche" as we came. There were many more wonderful memories of a very helpful and always pleasant big sister.
