Sweets

It just occurred to me how many countless times I have actually told friends and coworkers and probably our children this story about the sweets we used to get through the summer months. You see we never had a corner store living way out of town and the easiest thing to do was to help Mom with her baking, I not only got to lick the beaters I was also privy to all kinds of sweets. There were lots of sweets while baking, 'always add something' Mom told me, I remember, so your cake or muffins are not too dry, I remember kidding Mom at times when she asked how her cake was, I would always say 'kind of crummy', while taking the second piece. Living on a farm during the summer months there was fruit every where we looked, all kinds of berries and cherries ripe for the picking and that we did. We grew up eating lots of fresh fruit along with dates, figs and my favourite... the chocolate chippit's, they were a little expensive at the time and I figured it would be easily noticed if I ate too many of those so instead I used to sneak the odd piece of Baker's chocolate! Not too many liked eating the yellow raisins but they were one of my favourites because if I took a handful Mom did not realize some were missing. You could not get away doing that too often, all those sweets she had stowed away in a corner in the pantry. That's why I still have a love for baking, my favourite recipe and I believe it's our families favourite is Apple Dumplings... during those long hot summer months that pantry became one of my 'best friends' because the store in Bloomingdale was over 2 miles away! Love you Mom, Ross.
