VINCE COURTENAY

Don was a fine, good man. I met him in 1996 when he telephoned and asked if I would like to go with him on a revisit to Korea. I had just returned from Paris but agreed and shortly thereafter met him in Toronto for the Korean Airlines flight to Korea. He was cordial and caring and it was a most heartfelt trip, in November, with just a touch of the coming winter. I saw him again a couple of years later when I was living in Korea. He was traveling with the Veterans Affairs Minister Fred Mifflin and other members of the VAC 1998 Pilgrimage to Korea. With them was Sergeant Ernest Alva "Smokey" Smith, Victoria Cross, Bill Allan of the RCR who then was chairman of the Korea War Veterans Wall of Remembrance program, Claude Petit, the president of the National Aboriginal Veterans Association and others, all memorable. I was glad to see Don again when the bus pulled in at the Seoul Plaza Hotel, bringing the delegates from the airport after they had spent some time in Japan. I am sure that in his last years he spent much time with another KVA Canada former national president, David A. Davidson, who also lives in Kitchener, and who was at his funeral on February 11, along with Major Charles Kim who had driven there from Toronto. He will be missed, I know. A salute from a comrade.
