I remember meeting Clarence when I moved into the apartment on Donald. I was off work for illness, and I used to see him shuffling off to the variety store to get his lottery tickets, or sitting out on his balcony overlooking the parking lot. I said hi and we started talking, and before long we were going regularly for car rides and coffee at Tims, or a beer at Merry Hill Golf Course. One time he directed us somewhere out into the country, and I really started to wonder if he knew where we were going. In time we arrived at the club where he used to play horse shoes. He was all smiles seeing the place again. If I ever asked, 'Clarence, want to go for a coffee?' I never had to ask twice. In his post-stroke gait he was off that balcony and out the door in a flash. We had a mutually rewarding friendship those six months of summer in 2008, and it was such a thrilling suprise to see him again at the Rumig parties.
A friend gave me a stuffed dog for comfort during my illness, and I named it Clarence. I still have that dog, and sleep with it every night, so know that in these years since, memories of Clarence have never been far from my mind.
Danny, my deepest sympathy to you and your family on the loss of your dad. Happy memories.
