Hessians

E-mail from Marie - October 1, 2000. Subject: History.

"Gary, speaking of the Hessians, I'm still into the genealogy bit and Lordy, Lory, guess what?!!!  I'm the gg/grandaughter of a Hessian.  Heinrich Hermann was born in Germany in 1754 and was of the 30,000 German troops sent to fight on the side of the British against the Americans in the War of Independence.  He stayed in America after the war ended.  I have him on the 1790 Pennsylvania census with wife and 4 kids.  In 1796 he came forward with other UEL's to petition for land from the King.  I have a copy of his Petition made in Niagra.  Struck gold when this paper mentions that he fought in the Regiment von Knyphausen.  Looked it up on the net and found reams of info on the German Hessian soldiers.  Sent away for 'The Hessians of Upper Canada' and old Heinrich is written up.  He asked for 300 acres of land and got 200 acres on the north Younge Street in what is now the town of Aurora.  I have his Will naming all the children and divvying up district parcels of land to all the boys, among whom is my gg/grandfather James. By this time the name had evolved to Haman."

Marie was aware the Hessians who fought in the Amercan War of Independence wore pointed hats. I replied that was to hide their pointed heads.
