As a volunteer at the University at the Gates, I have had the privilege to talk to and get to know Esther for the last number of months.  Her sweet disposition and strong faith always struck me and I enjoyed spending time with her.  

What I will remember most fondly, was 2 1/2 weeks ago, when we were chatting during lunch, and she was remembering her younger days growing up her sisters and meeting her husband, playing the organ in church and being a pastors wife in a very old church building.  At times she had to think hard and maybe mistakes were made in the remembering, but there was joy as she told her stories.   After talking for a bit longer in the side room after lunch,  she turned to the keyboard and her fingers began to gently play part of one hymn...and then, very clearly,  Esther played the entirety of 'Jesus loves Me' for me...it was a beautiful testimony and a great encouragement to me that day.

My condolences to Esther's family...she will be missed in the Downey neighbourhood.
