Bill and the pregnant ladies

My history with Bill started the day I was interviewed for a department headship position at St. Jerome's in 1969. Little did I know I was making history by being considered as the first woman staff member in St. Jerome's history. So while John Theis, the principal, was all in favour of breaking ground by introducing women as staff members, I later found out how much resistance there was to having women on staff. So right in the middle of the interview, in walked Bill. He had come out of the dress rehearsal for West Side Story, at Fr. John's request, to participate in the interview, and, I think, to give his seal of approval -- or not -- as one of the most respected men on staff . I came to realize later that he too had reservations about women on staff, but must have given that seal of approval for I was subsequently hired. Bill may have had his reservations come back when both Carolyn Pegg and I were pregnant at the same time. When both of us came through the main office door together, I remember seeing him shrink back into his own office (he was VP at the time) with a look that suggested great nervousness as if he might end up having to deliver a baby on the spot.
