WILLIAM (BILL) OSTAPCHUK

1932 - 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bill Ostapchuk on April 11, 2024 in Waterloo at the age of 91.
Predeceased by his parents Teodor and Palagia (nee Zwarycz) Ostapchuk, he leaves behind his beloved wife and best friend of over 71 years Josephine (nee Rucheski); dear younger brother Peter Ostapchuk (Nadia); his precious daughters Dianne Rouleau (Rob Hannah) and Kathy Mackowski (Robert); cherished grandchildren Jessica Rouleau (Jeroen van Heumen), Andrew Mackowski (Stephanie Baird), Kristen Mackowski (Steven Hatesohl) and Justin Rouleau (Beth Martin); treasured great grandchildren Reilly Rouleau, Chloe and Louis Hatesohl, Brinley and Bryson Mackowski, and Mackenzie and Brooks Rouleau.

Born in Toronto on December 8, 1932, Bill attended Parkdale Collegiate Institute and University of Toronto before completing a Chartered Professional Accountant degree. His first and only employer for 39 years was Varity Corporation (Massey-Ferguson) where he held a senior financial position.

After retirement, Bill and Jo made their Lakefield cottage their permanent home where Bill enjoyed fishing, golfing and family time.  For several years, winters were spent at Maple Leaf Estates in Florida where, in addition to golfing, he took up lawn bowling, the art of stained glass and watercolour painting.

Bill’s volunteer career spanned over 50 years, starting in 1960 when he got involved with the Brant Skating Club and Skate Canada (CFSA). He worked tirelessly to improve figure skating in Canada. In 1990 he was elected President of Skate Canada and served for the next two years, during whichtime he also served as a director of the Canadian Olympic Association for two years. In total, Bill was a member of the Skate Canada board for 24 years. In 2011 he was inducted into the Skate Canada Hall of Fame as a Builder.

The family would like to thank Dr. Stephanie Wright, Dr. Yew and the palliative care team, as well as all the staff at St. Mary’s Heart Function Clinic for the exceptional care provided to Bill over the years.

At Bill’s request, cremation has taken place. Interment will take place at Prospect Cemetery in Toronto. Celebration of his life will be held on Sunday June 9th, 2024, between 1 and 4 pm, at the Rebel Creek Gulf Club, 1517 Snyder’s Road, Petersburg, ON N0B 2H0.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre in Toronto, Diabetes Canada, or St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation - Heart Function Clinic would be appreciated by the family.
