Obituary for Walter Edward Fortuna

Fortuna, Walter (Wally)

It is with sadness that we say goodbye to our Dad Wally Fortuna. Dad passed away peacefully at the Village of Winston Park in Kitchener on Saturday, March 6th.

Dad married Mom (Mildred Keelan) from Kenilworth and raised the four of us (Bob, Paul, Donna and Mike) in Kitchener.

Mom died in 1987 following a battle with Leukemia and Dad remarried Elise in 1996 who passed in 2009.

Dad will be missed by his children and their spouses, Bob (Mary Catherine), Paul (Dorothy), Donna (Mike) and Mike (Chris), his grandchildren Kathleen, Danny, Heather, Lisa Rose, Katie and Joe, and his great-grandchildren Nathan, Ava, Kye, Kayden and Auston.

Predeceased by his parents Thomas and Jennie and his brother Eddie. Ed is survived by his widow Lynda who also joins us in our sadness.

Dad worked his entire career at Uniroyal Tire in Kitchener retiring in 1991 just short of 45 years of service.

Dad’s favorite hobby was golfing. In retirement he worked for several years at the Foxwood Golf Course helping with general maintenance and upkeep of the course. He loved to play golf with his friends and children.

Dad was always involved in our activities regardless of where they took us. He and Mom were always there for baseball and hockey games whether they were local or tournaments out of town. We grew up in a loving household and cannot express how fortunate we were to have grown up with such involved parents.

Dad was also a big baseball fan. Dad got involved in Kitchener Minor Baseball while we were playing as kids back in the 60’s and 70’s. He served as President of the league and then settled into the role of Equipment Manager, which he managed for 30 years, finally retiring from the role in 2005. To recognize Dad’s many years of service a park bench was dedicated in his name at Breithaupt Park, Kitchener. He was a recipient of the Ontario Baseball Association Volunteer of the Year Award in 1995. He was the first Kitchener resident to receive that honor.

Thank you to the staff at Winston Park (Eby Neighbourhood) for their phenomenal and loving care of our father.
