Obituary for Shirley Mabel Newton

Shirley Mabel Newton (nee Ritchings)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beautiful mom Shirley Newton, on Friday November 25, 2022 at the age of 88. We truly believe she died of a broken heart after losing the love of her life only 7 weeks ago.

Beloved wife of the late Donald Leroy Newton for 67 years; loving mother of Terry (Wit), Patti (Glenn), Sandra (Steve). Adored grandmother of Amanda (Dan), Adam (Jaco), Scott (Lisa), Lori (Tim), Mike (Vicci), Samantha (Evan) and Dan (Alyssa). She will be greatly missed by her great grandchildren, Stella, Deacon, Finnley, James, Everett, Tyler, and Carter.

Predeceased by her parents Charlie and Mabel; brothers Howie and Doug; and sisters Edna and Muriel.
She will be dearly missed by many friends and extended family in British Columbia and Ontario.

Shirley was born in Vancouver where she and Don met at the Young Peoples group of Ryerson United Church. She was a lifetime member of the United Church Women, as well as Beta Sigma Phi sorority, which provided an immediate sense of belonging in their many moves across Canada. She was always active in her community and devoted 17 years to the Girl Guides of Canada.

Shirley’s first priority was always her family but once her girls had moved on in their own lives, Shirley dedicated 13 years of service to the Royal Bank. Shirley had a passion for sewing, enjoyed bowling and aquafit, and doing word puzzles. Along with Don, her greatest pleasure was spending time with her children and grandchildren, travelling with friends, and attending live theatre.

On behalf of our family, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents of Winston Park Retirement Home for the care and friendship shown to our parents during the past five years. We are also deeply grateful for the care Shirley received from the staff at St. Mary’s Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation-Cardiac Care.
