Obituary for Robert William Joseph Shorten
Shorten, Robert William Joseph:
Born March 11, 1938, Dartmouth, NS; died January 10, 2023 at Grand River Hospital at the age of 84. Predeceased by his wife Patricia Annie Shorten (née Bodnar). Bob leaves behind his son, Jay Shorten, a librarian at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma. He is survived by his partner Marguerite Carroll of Waterloo, ON. He will be missed by siblings Carol (late Joe) Chandik of Calgary, AB and Donald (Ruth) of Keswick, ON and is predeceased by sister Deborah Auby.
A Cold War veteran, Bob served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Armed Forces for 28 years, retiring with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer and was then a quality control inspector for the Department of National Defence for 14 years. He enjoyed the camaraderie of his three military clubs and going on cruises with Marguerite.
Cremation has taken place. Interment of Bob's cremated remains will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at 2:45 PM at Parkview Cemetery, 335 University Ave., Waterloo, ON N2J 4A8. A celebration of his life will be held by the Army, Navy & Air Force veterans’ club later in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Army, Navy and Airforce Club Unit #247 would be appreciated by the family.
