The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Robert Henkel can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Condolence: My dear wife Bonnie sent me an e-mail tweaking my memory of this--the anniversary of Bob Henkel's death a year ago. Upon this reminder, a flood of memories returned which included how much I dearly miss him, as well as missing our worship services where we can be face to face, rather than the feeble ZOOM alternative. In fact, I miss the entire Henkel clan--I cannot read my favorite New Testament creed from Philippians 2 without thinking of Joel. And how I miss seeing various women from the Henkel crowd entering our mission post after church (you know, nearby Tim Hortons). But what jumps into my mind and heart about Bob are several visions that keep hopping to the fore--1) the dignity when he read the Scriptures; 2) his wry sense of humour, and one particular incident screams out to me and brings a "humungous" smile crosses my visage: on one particular Sunday just before our worship service began, he caught my eye and began pointing at his head. What's up, I thought? The pointing grew more frantic. Finally, to my embarrassment, I got it. I had forgotten to take off my baseball hat, the very one covered with a bunch of pins which contained most of my radical views. No, I was not trying to make a point. I had simply forgotten to take it off! So, off it came, whereupon Bob and I both smiled and entered into a relaxed pre-worship calm. So, when this COVID-19 nightmare ends, I will spring for coffee at our Timmy's outlet in honor of that beloved gentleman who reminded me that I should worship without my head gear.

Much affection to Joan & the family,
Oz.. :. .

Condolence: Dear Joan & the whole bunch of you,

Yes, I know Bonnie already sent condolences for your loss of Bob, but I feel the need to add some words of my own (& just my own). Although it seems an eternity since we've had a real church service, I can anticipate that sad moment when I will look to that side of the church pews where I would often catch Bob's eye, & he would give me a HENKEL grin. Or when we would share the peace by a wave. Or the time just before the service began when he kept pointing to his head & then kept pointing to me--until I finally got it--that I had kept my pin-ladden hat on & forgot about it. I'll miss his solemn & dignified reading of Scripture; his marvelous sense of humor. Although I look forward to the return of our Christ Church breakfasts I will feel an empty spot in my heart without Bob there, let alone at or missionary chapel at nearby Tim Hortons . Bob, you were far more than a Christ Church charter member. You were a true elder in the Biblical sense of that word. Christ Church has lost one of its greats. .

Condolence: Dear Joan and Family. Sorry to hear of Bob's passing. Any time I met him, he always greeted you with a big smile and could get you laughing about something crazy. If you were feeling down, he was the kind of guy who could lift you out of your funk and put things in perspective. He'll be sorely missed.

Condolence: Dear Joan & Family, our deepest sympathy on Bob's passing. I first meet Bob in grade 2. We have had 70 years of the best friendship that two people could have. We played together, we worked together and the last many years, with our families, we shared the good times at Gillies Lake. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Condolence: Dear Joan and Family,
Oz and I were shocked and saddened to hear of Bob's death. We will remember Bob as an integral part of our church family at Christ Lutheran. He had that rock solid personality that you knew you could depend on. He was wonderfully kind and caring with a ready sense of humour. We will miss him deeply. We hold you in our prayers.
