Obituary for Paul Nelson

Paul Clifford Nelson
6/15/1927 - 4/17/2022

Paul Clifford Nelson was born to Clifford W Nelson, an Assemblies of God evangelist, and his wife Eleanor (nee Hicks) on 6/15/1927 in Pembroke, Ontario, Canada. He joined the Lord on Easter Sunday 4/17/2022 in Edmond, Oklahoma, USA.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Flora. Paul is also survived by his only sibling, Ruth, and his only child, David, and grandchildren Tyler, Kia, Tait, and Cade by his daughter-in-law Theresa. He grew up in Alberta, Canada, where he enjoyed an active outdoor life, hunting and fishing in the Rockies with his father. As children, he and his sister sang on a weekly Christian radio show during the depression.

He played Junior Hockey in the Detroit Red Wings farm system and graduated from The University of Western Ontario, where he was the Canadian Intercollegiate wrestling Champion. During WWII, he was an RCAF air cadet and served in the Pacific on the HCMS Charlottetown. He attended Law school at Berkeley and the University of Miami and, after passing the New York Bar, worked for Standard Oil, followed by International Harvester (now Navistar), where he became a leading pioneer in Product Liability defense. He argued before the US Supreme Court and incorporated Bauer Skates in the United States.

He was an amazing husband and father who built a rink in the backyard every winter for his son and schoolmates to play hockey, never missed a PTA meeting (where he took intimidatingly detailed notes on legal pads), travelled through the British Isles with his amateur British historian wife, mastering left lane driving, and left-handed stick shifting and later cared for his invalid wife for a decade in their home of 50 years in Mt Prospect, Illinois. He lived up to the name his parents gave him- he fought the good fight.

The funeral service will be held graveside at Woodland Cemetery, 119 Arlington Blvd, Kitchener, ON N2A 2G8, on April 22, 2022, at 2:30 p.m. Those unable to attend in person are welcome to join the service via live stream at https://www.henrywalser.com/live-streaming.
