Obituary for Patrick Gruber

Patrick Gruber
Gruber, Patrick David:
Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, August 2nd, 2019 at home at the age of 77.
Patrick accepted death with resignation after more than 10 years of battling aggressive prostate cancer.
Before all else, Patrick was inseparable from Donna (née Smith), his wife of 53 1/2 years. Their love and partnership enriched family and friends.
Loving father of Tawndee Gruber (Ferdinand Krauss) and Rob Gruber (Jana). Much loved grandpa of Matt, Étienne, Joseph and Yannick. Brother of Shirley Bone (Charlie) and Joanne Maddeford (Bill).
Predeceased by his parents David Gruber, Alice Brohman Gruber, and his siblings Angela, Donald and Douglas.
Patrick was a voracious reader and a man of many interests. He graduated from Wilfred Laurier University and received his master's degree from the University of Waterloo. He was known to many as a challenging and devoted high school history teacher. With his many friends, he loved canoe trips, fishing, skiing, tennis and many other activities. He and Donna loved discovering new places and travelled to many destinations on 5 continents. Patrick believed in personal responsibility and contribution to the community.
Patrick was proud of his pioneer heritage - his Alsatian and Irish ancestors pioneered Ontario, all arriving in the early 19th century. He and Donna were raised in Guelph, then lived in Midland for 42 years, and moved to Kitchener to be active in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He was engaged with life to the end. He will be greatly missed by many.
Cremation has taken place.
Patrick's family will receive relatives and friends from 2- 4 pm & 7 - 9 pm on Monday, August 5th, 2019 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Tuesday, August 6th, 2019 at 1:30 pm.
A private family interment will take place at a later date.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Prostate Cancer Canada would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
