Obituary for Pat Flynn

Patrick (Pat) Joseph Flynn
January 16, 1945 – May 10, 2022

This isn’t how I thought the end would come; I thought I would be around for a little while longer. But today the good Lord called me to Him and I left my family to be by His side.

I leave my beautiful bride, Noreen (nee Conlin), who has been by my side since our wedding on July 8, 1967. She has been my rock for the last 60 years and the reason for me achieving the many successes I have attained. My adored children: my son Paddy and his wife Hannah and their daughters Amelie and Lucie; my daughter Tara and her husband Ralph and their son Devlin; and my youngest Megan and her husband Mark and their children Eamon, Lily and Rowan. My pride and love for them knows no bounds and I ask that you take care of them for me. I wanted to end this paragraph here, but my kids and wife kept telling me to say more.

I reluctantly pass the leadership of the Flynn clan to my siblings: Maureen and her wife Pauline; K.C. and his wife Deb; Larry and his wife Michele; Terry and his wife Stephanie; and Sean and his wife Doris. I will miss Noreen’s siblings: John and Kay; Paul and JoAnne; Hugh and Andrea and Cathy and Doug. I join my parents Joe and Betty and my siblings Michael, Mary Geraldine and Cathaleen Mavourneen as well as my in-laws Nora and Ed Conlin. For many years I didn’t know I had younger siblings, but somehow you kept reminding me that there were more than me. I love you all, more than I probably ever said to each of you.

I have so many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews on both the Flynn and Conlin sides that I would need a much longer obituary to mention them all by name. Please know that I love each of you dearly and I am sad that I won’t be able to see your families grow and celebrate their many accomplishments.

If you haven’t figured it out yet – my family was at the core of my being. I’m sorry I left so suddenly but do know that I am still walking with you – all you need do is say a little prayer to me.

I was most fortunate to be a graduate of three wonderful academic institutions: St. Jerome’s High School, St. Jerome’s University, and The University of Ottawa (Faculty of Law). Each of these educational institutions made a significant contribution to the man I became. Thank you.

I’ve had a few jobs over the years: bricklayer, office manager, lawyer, and finally my most prized position as a Justice in the Superior Court of Ontario. I loved that job and was disappointed to have to retire on my 75th birthday in 2020. There were so many people along the way that played such an important role in my professional career including Eugene George, Paul and JoAnne Conlin and my fellow judges: to each of them I say thank you for your support, your mentorship and your trust in me. My many friends (you know who you are) have also been a part of my personal and professional journey over the last 77 years – thanks for always being there for me and my family. They are going to need you in the days to come.

My family will be holding visitation at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467, on Friday, May 13th from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.(vigil prayers at 8:00 p.m.) A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, May 14th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 56 Duke Street West, in Kitchener at 11 a.m. All my family and friends are invited to participate in my send-off (It will be live streamed via henrywalser.com/live-streaming for those that are not able to join us in person). No flowers please but if you would kindly support three important causes, I would be most grateful: A Better Tent City (Kitchener); St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation - MRI Fund; and the Carmel of St. Joseph. Donations can be made through the Walser Funeral Home.

As you well know, I am very proud of my Irish heritage and my attachment to the land of my family. I trust that my soul has already passed through old Ireland. I’ve also been a life-long Leaf fan and I’m sad that I’ve gone mid-way through their first playoff series. Just know that I will be riding on their shoulders all the way to the Stanley Cup parade -- #GoLeafsGo.

Life is too short – hug and kiss your loved ones and always make peace. You know I tried. I have lived a good and faithful life. I will miss you all. Be good to one another. Slainté.
