Obituary for Maynard Wideman

Wideman, Maynard:

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maynard Wideman at the age of 68. He left us on May 22, 2021 and was reunited with his son Chris (1998). Loving and cherished husband of Susan (Brenneman) for 42 years. Proud father of the late Chris, Kim and Jeff Shantz, and Jeremy and Lindsay (Wilson) Wideman. Devoted and adored grandfather to Henry, Abby, Nora, and Isla.

He will be lovingly remembered by his brothers and sisters Elaine and Alvin Hershberger, Elroy and Ruby Wideman, Beulah and Mel Gerber, Reta and Rudy Derksen, Eva and Norm Woodard, Cliff Wideman, Stew and Diane Wideman, and Marilyn Wideman; brothers- and sisters-in-law Judy Brenneman, Maureen and Harold Gerber, Linda and Dave Lichty, Gloria and Tom Roth, John and Shirley Brenneman, and Dan and Lena Brenneman; and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Aaron and Florence (Martin) Wideman, parents-in-law Floyd and Bernice (Wagler) Brenneman, sister and brother-in-law Alice and Robert Martin, sister-in-law Joanne Wideman, and brother-in-law Doug Brenneman. A lifelong resident of St. Jacobs, Maynard will be greatly missed by a large community of extended family, friends, and neighbours.

Maynard was the 8th of 10 children, born July 13, 1952 on the farm at Wagner’s Corner. He enjoyed his time on the family farm, developing a lifelong love of trucking while sometimes neglecting his barn chores as he watched trucks driving to and from the Waterloo Stock Yards. He enjoyed driving truck for 46 years, the last 40 years of which he spent at Home Hardware before retiring in 2018. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Professional Drivers in 2015.

As a young family, Maynard and Sue enjoyed camping, travel, and attending the sporting events of their three children. In later years, Maynard took every opportunity that he could to spend time with his grandchildren, pushing them on the swing in the backyard, taking quiet moments to read stories together, and spoiling them with sweets of any form. He also enjoyed camping weekends with the extended Wideman and Brenneman families.

Maynard embodied a patient, stoic nature, moored by his faith and love of family and friends. He was generous with his time and spirit, joining Sue on medical mission trips in the Philippines, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Peru. He was a long-time member of St. Jacobs Mennonite Church. An avid cyclist and camper, Maynard enjoyed staying active, spending many summers water-skiing on Chesley Lake and, more recently, teaching his grandchildren to water-ski. He took pleasure in the simple things in life: time spent with family and friends, a game of cards (especially Rook), good food and desserts, and time outdoors.

In his last years, Maynard faced many unexpected health issues, meeting each with grace, courage, and an unwavering determination to overcome each challenge. In 2019, Maynard’s sister Marilyn donated her stem cells, providing a wonderful gift of additional time with family and friends. For this, we are forever grateful.

A private graveside service will be held at St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery. Drive-by visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 29th, 2021 at the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church, 1308 King St. N., St. Jacobs. Guests are asked to enter the parking lot from Young St., at the back of the church and are required to stay in their vehicles. Arrangements entrusted to the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 519-749-8467.

Donations in Maynard’s memory can be made to Juravinski Hospital - Stem Cell Transplant Research or the Mennonite Central Committee.
