Obituary for Mary P. Wawryk

Wawryk, Mary Patricia

Passed away peacefully with her family by her side on November 16th, 2022, at the age of 80.

She was survived by her doting husband Edward, and her adoring children Stacey (Ivan), Christine (Darrin), Stephen (Melanie), and Cindy, and the lights of her life Reilly, Keaton, Brittany, Roman, Magnus, Eben, Chloe, and Lilah. Daughter of the late Joe and Rose O’Reilly. Beloved sister of Jeannie (Glen), Dennis (Donna), and Rose (Ross) and the late Joey, Frank, Armen, Jackie, Colleen, and Michael.

Daughter. Sister. Wife. Mom. Grandma. Friend. Teacher. Mary wore many hats throughout her life, and she wore each with a class and grace that only she could. If you knew her, you knew this. She saw the potential in those she cared about when they could not see it in themselves. With a sideways smile and a “get going,” she pushed us all to be our best, whether it was her taking us on a shopping spree before back to school, being the loudest cheerleader in the bleachers at our sporting events or helping us for hours at the kitchen table with our homework. Mary was the matriarch of her family and the founder of tradition. Every Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and birthday was magical because of her steadfast commitment to making them so. We will do our best to honour these learned traditions and act as the carriers of them. For a woman who words could not do justice, here we are trying. Mary was playful but firm, wise but open-minded, empathetic but honest, and a remarkable woman who left everything better than she found it. We will remember her in every good scotch and soda at sunset, every perfectly styled blunt cut, every volleyball party, every drive past Fred Astaire Dance Studio, every pair of vibrant Christmas pyjamas, and every sticky bun. Mary’s children and grandchildren were her everything. She cherished spending time with them during their trips to Florida, hanging out with them while she tanned on the “Happy E,” and making Bits and Bites and Christmas cookies for the holiday season. Mary made everything special and brought us all together while doing so, always including her little sister Colleen in the fun. Although times will not be the same without Mary here, we will cherish all the times she was and remember her in all the times yet to be.

Forever in our hearts.
