Obituary for Mary Hedviga Stanley

Stanley, Mary
Passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 in her 80th year.
Born on June 6, 1941 in Tilley, Alberta to parents, Joseph and Augustine Toth.

Beloved wife of Brock for 56 years.
Loving mother of Conrad.
Dear sister of Helen (Mike) Emslie, Joe (Jenny) Toth and the late Tina Toth (Dennis Roy).
Predeceased by her parents.

Mary spent a lifetime caring for others. Those she cared for always came first even to a fault: to the detriment of her own health. She was a devout Roman Catholic in the Slovak tradition.

She began her career at the age of 18 looking after developmentally challenged/disabled children at the Alberta Provincial Training School in Red Deer, Alberta, later known as the Michener Centre. From there, she entered the Holy Cross Hospital School of Nursing in Calgary, graduating with her RN in 1964. This was followed by a Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing from Essondale (Riverview) Hospital, Coquitlan, BC in 1965. Mary worked at a number of Vancouver hospitals in 1965, including Vancouver General and St. Vincent's; and at St. Paul's Hospital in the ICU unit from 1966 to 1971.

She accompanied her husband to Kitchener, Ontario in 1971 and worked at KW Hospital, now Grand River Hospital, for over ten years; leaving as Evening Supervisor on Pediatrics. Mary then went into Community Nursing starting with VON (Victorian Order of Nurses) from 1984 to 1991 and then with the Community Nursing Registry to 2009. In 1991, Mary pursued a new parallel career getting her Real Estate License. Mary continued to provide foot care for a number of special clients until crippling arthritis, significant dementia and a fractured pelvis forced her to retire at age 75, ending more than 50 years of caring for others.

A private Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's RC Church. Arrangements entrusted to the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 519-749-8467.

Our special thanks and gratitude go out to Mary Lounder, PSW who looked after Mary in her last years.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to Hospice Waterloo Region would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
