Obituary for Majella Dowhaniuk

Dowhaniuk, Majella

After four weeks of diminishing health Majella passed away peacefully during the early hours of January 19 at Chartwell Westmount LTC, 99 years old and three months from her 100th birthday. Despite her declining health Majella was able to enjoy her favourite foods, conversations with her children, grandchildren and siblings, viewing numerous family pictures, singing and listening to many of her favourite songs.

Majella was married to her beloved husband, Alex for 56 years until his passing in 2001. She was a member of a large French-Canadian family of 13 siblings. Dear sister to Marie,Therese, Estelle, Celine (John) and Denyse (Larry) and brothers Marcel and Hubert (Gaetane). Predeceased by her parents, Marie Louise and Fredrick Gervais, her brothers, Louis, Ted, Laurent, Henry, Adrian and Charles. Sadly missed by numerous other family members.

Majella's children were the joy of her life. She was the proud mother of Louise Tegelberg (Henning), Rene (Maureen), Ronald (Predeceased Ruby), Paul (Judy), David (Tracey) and Michael. Majella was also the grandmother or Meme of Matthew Tegelberg (Lori), Laura Rae (Jamie), Carly Domingues (Shawn), Brenden Dowhaniuk (Estera Jakiel), Sean Dowhaniuk (Samantha Leighton), Cara Dowhaniuk (Gary Rempel), David M.J. Dowhaniuk, Mary Dowhaniuk (Oswald Palicios), Briton Burgio (Ryan), Davis Dowhaniuk, Samuel Dowhaniuk and Ella Dowhaniuk.
Great-grandmother to Elliott, Casey, Arlo, Jacqueline, Gwendolyn, Hazel, Gawain, Henry, Desmond, Audrey, and Meyer.

With her family she enjoyed, attending Blue Jay games, watching her grandchildren participate in sports, family dinners, celebrations with extended family, baking - in particular making tortiere and drives in the country. Also Majella was never hesitant to try new experiences whether it was a jaunt in a speed boat on the St. Lawerence River, a trip to Rome with extended family or sliding down the Sportsworld's huge slide with her children.

The Dowhaniuk family would like to thank the many people who helped make Mom's four years at Chartwell Westmount LTC an enjoyable experience. She enjoyed the numerous outings, singalongs and playing the piano amongst many of the other activities. (Mom really missed Lisa Elms, the Recreational Director). More importantly, during these last four weeks, the care, compassion and kindness shown by the staff was truly exceptional and appreciated, in particular Nurses Linda, Sarah, Myrna and Lisa along with Doctor Dixon.

Cremation arrangements entrusted to the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener (519) 749-8467.

The funeral will take place at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Waterloo on February 11, 2023. Family will receive guests at the church at 11 o' clock with a mass at 11:30 a.m. and celebration of life to follow in the church hall.
