Lionel Andrew Fernandes (December 17, 1937 - February 28, 2023)
On February 28, 2023, Lionel Andrew Fernandes passed away peacefully at Sunnyside Home and Community Housing in Kitchener, ON at the age of 85. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Hella in 2000 and his father Aleixo Xavier Cosma Fernandes, mother Rosario Santana Concencao Fernandes, and siblings Antonio Fernandes, Maria D'Souza, Dolorosa Santiago, and Domenic Fernandes, and his niece, Audrey Fernandes.
He is survived by his brother Ralph Fernandes, sister Bernadette Dias, and stepdaughter Karin Udell. He was the cherished uncle of Melissa Lewandowski, Ronald Santiago, Roland Santiago, Alexandria Fernandes-Hoyt, Lorraine Kennedy, Kevin Dias, Alina Dias-Byrne, Anne Dias, Rhonda Fernandes, Rachel Fernandes, Ryan Fernandes, Lynette Fernandes, Ramona Fernandes, Steven D'Souza, Trevor D'Souza and Blaise D'Souza.
Lionel was known for his love of travel and exploring new places, having visited many countries throughout his life. He was also a former bodybuilder and held the title of "Mr. Pakistan". His adventurous nature led him to immigrate to Canada and paved the road for others to follow his footsteps. Lionel settled in Kitchener, Ontario, and had a diverse career before becoming an established architect. He enjoyed staying active through playing tennis, hiking, and cycling, and loved trying new foods. Lionel was known for his excellent conversational skills, quick wit, and love of a good debate. He was a kind, generous and intelligent man who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff at Sunnyside Residence for their compassionate care of Lionel.
A celebration of Lionel's life will be held at a later date, and in lieu of flowers, donations to Parkinson's Canada or the Michael J. Fox Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Arrangements entrusted to Henry Walser Funeral Home (519-749-8467).
