Obituary for Lawrence "Larry" Laba

Laba, Lawrence "Larry" Thomas:

Lawrence Thomas Laba was born and raised in Grimsby, Ontario on October 6, 1938, to his father William, and his mother Mary. He grew up on a farm with his brother Andy and sister Fran. They were a hard-working Ukrainian family. Larry loved them very much. He also treasured the time he spent with his best friend Russell in Grimsby.

He moved to Kitchener after working in Ancaster for Cribb Cut Stone. He then worked at George & Asmussen where he met his wife, Lucy George.

Larry was a skilled barber. He completed barber college and co-owned his own shop in Kitchener.

Larry and Lucy married on August 7, 1967. They had a son, the light of their life, Christopher George Laba on January 8, 1972, whom Larry loved and was very proud of.

Larry graduated from Conestoga College with a Diploma in Electrical Engineering; from the University of Waterloo with a BA in Electrical Engineering, and from the Canadian Institute of Management where he obtained a C.L.M. Degree after studying there for 4 years.

He worked at National Cash Register (NCR) for 38 years as an electrical engineer, where he got to travel around the world. He loved his job and the people he worked with.

After his retirement at NCR, Larry took up golf as a hobby. He went to the Golfsmith School in Austin, Texas and opened a small business on the side where he made golf clubs. He also worked for 5 years at Care Lift Equipment.

Larry loved his wife, Lucy; his son, Chris; his daughter-in-law, Corrina, and his dear grandchildren: Joseph and Isabella.

He also cherished his nieces and nephews of the Laba and Skrypka family, his mother-in-law, Mary, as well as many in the George family.

Larry liked to jog, dance, play classical guitar, travel, work outdoors, and spend time with his loved ones. He was a kind and hard-working man who will be missed greatly.

Those we love don’t go away; they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear.

Larry's family will receive relatives and friends from 3:00 pm-6:00pm on Monday, May 29th, 2023 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. A funeral liturgy service will be held at 10:30am on Tuesday, May 30th, 2023 in the funeral home chapel followed by a reception for family and friends.
