Obituary for Jozef Lonkovic

Jozef (Joe) Lonkovic

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Joe Lonkovic on October 4, 2023 surrounded by the love of his family. Beloved husband of 52 years to Maria. Proud and devoted father of Monica (Dan) and Edith (Joe). Cherished 'Grandpa' of Lukas, Alexa, Markus, Jacob and Marco. Lovingly remembered by his many relatives in Canada and Slovenia. He also leaves behind several close friends. Predeceased by his parents Stefan and Rozalija, and his siblings Feri, Ana, Teri and Laci. Joe was the youngest and last surviving member of his family.

As a young man, Joe had big aspirations and left Slovenia for Germany for work. He then came to Canada in 1969 with a dream of giving his future family a better life. Once he was settled, Maria followed him in 1970. Joe loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. By trade, Joe was a butcher who retired from JM Schneiders. Joe's most precious moments were spending time with his family. He also loved cooking and barbecuing for his family. Joe's pride and joy were his grandchildren who he loved beyond words and who loved him back endearingly. He would drop everything immediately to drive them where they needed to be and adored spending time with them. Not a day went by that Joe was not at a sports field watching his grandchildren play and was always their biggest fan. He truly had a heart of gold. All who knew Joe will remember him for his love for story telling and great sense of humour.

Joe's family would like to thank the Stroke Unit staff at Grand River Hospital for their compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that the Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation is considered for any donations (cards available at the funeral home).

Joe's family will receive family and friends at Henry Walser Funeral Home on Friday, October 6 from 3:00-7:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at St. Anthony Daniel RC Church on Saturday, October 7 at 11:00 AM. Interment at Parkview Cemetery, reception to follow at Waterloo Regional Police Association (1128 Rife Rd. Cambridge).

If you are unable to attend the Funeral Mass for Joe, the family invites you to view the service via livestream on the funeral home website at https://www.henrywalser.com/live-streaming.
