Obituary for John Henry Quehl

Quehl, John Henry:

It is with the great sorrow that comes from great love, that we announce the passing of John Henry Quehl on Sunday, March 6th, 2022. He passed on peacefully, in the comfort of his home, with family by his side and faith in his heart. He was in his 88th year.

Born July 25th, 1934, in Tavistock, he was the son of the late Henry and Erica Quehl. His family, which included his late sister Elaine (Schneider), moved to Kitchener just as John became school age. He remained in Kitchener for all his years, attending Sheppard Public School, Kitchener Collegiate Institute and earning a degree from Waterloo College which is now known as Wilfrid Laurier University. He went on to work at J.M. Schneiders for over 35 years.

John married Hazel Rose Miske in August of 1960 at Historic St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. They celebrated over 51 years of marriage before Hazel’s passing a decade ago. Together they built a life with cornerstones of faith and family, loyalty and love.

John was, and remains, dearly loved and cherished by his children; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Chris Woods; and son, Steven Quehl; and by his grandchildren, to whom he was known as Papa; Zachary, Alyssa, and Nicole Woods; Isaac and Asher Quehl. He will also be fondly remembered by many extended family, friends and neighbours.

John dedicated himself to his family and, without complaint, endlessly assisted them with all their pursuits and endeavours. There were many years he must have felt he had a part-time chauffeur position as he ensured everyone got to where they needed to be. John had a keen mind and had many and varied interests. He enjoyed fishing, swimming and sunsets and provided our family with yearly beach vacations which offered all three. There were many other holidays spent traveling throughout Ontario and other provinces. He enjoyed and excelled at puzzles of all kinds, was a bird enthusiast, collector of stamps, and an avid sports fan. He had solid cooking skills and helped with meals for frequent family gatherings and special events. He was amazing at barbequing and the secret, he maintained, was briquettes! We will cherish all these memories and so many more.

We wish to thank the in home palliative care team for all their support, compassion, kindness and assistance in making John’s wishes a reality.

The family will be having a graveside committal service at Memory Gardens in the late spring. Cremation has taken place. As expressions of sympathy, donations to St. Peter's Lutheran Church- TV Ministry or Grand River Regional Cancer Centre would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
