Podrebarac, Alex Joel:
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of (Alex) Joel Podrebarac, in his 29th year, in the early morning hours of Monday, May 8th with his loving wife Julie, parents Suzy and Alex, and brother Logan by his side.
Joel was able to spend his last few days enjoying the sunshine on his face and hearing the spring birds sing their songs. With true grace and strength, he fought a difficult and unpredictable battle with cancer since October and is now free of suffering.
Joel leaves behind his newlywed wife Julie Szpara Podrebarac, parents Suzy and Alex Podrebarac, brother Logan (Raquel), mother- and father-in-law Kathy and Mark Szpara, brothers-in-law Ted (Jaclyn) and John, grandparents Alex and Ana Podrebarac, Gail and George Menzies, aunt Susie Jezerinac (Dan), uncle Greg Menzies (Sarah), cousins Matthew, Thomas, Evan, and Skye, along with many other extended family members and cherished friends.
Joel and Julie had just begun their married lives together after meeting in University and College in Toronto 11 years ago. They fondly enjoyed travelling and adventuring together, while living in Kitchener-Waterloo for the past six years. Joel had a thriving position as a senior software developer in Waterloo and we thank Vehikl for their kindness throughout these last eight months. Joel was a smart, witty, innovative, and gentle young man who will be missed dearly by family and many friends - especially his soulmate Julie who will keep his spirit alive.
Joel's last few weeks were spent at Waterloo Hospice where he received beautiful compassionate care - the family is very thankful for this tender support as well as the continuous care received at the Grand River Hospital Cancer Centre together with Mount Sinai and Princess Margaret. The family extends special thanks to the many healthcare staff and doctors, especially Dr. Mithoowani.
The family will hold a private funeral.
Memorial donations may be made to the Grand River Hospital Foundation- Cancer Centre as expressions of sympathy.
