Obituary for Jane Hersey Lucy

Jane Hersey Lucy

Passed peacefully from this world on November 15, 2022 just short of her 95th birthday.

Jane lived her life with love, courage, dignity, humour, compassion, joy, creativity, and an always curious and lively mind.

Raised in South Carolina and Boston. Educated at Earlham College from which she graduated in 1948. Came to Canada and settled in Kitchener-Waterloo. Known for her support of social justice and equity and arts and culture in her community. She cultivated a city garden of native plants welcoming to birds, animals, and all who pass by. A traveler with and navigator of hearing, then vision loss, and lesser mobility in later years, Jane showed all of us how to live fully and creatively with these challenges.

Beloved mother of daughters Robin (Ypsilanti, Michigan), and Alison (Kitchener), and a son, Henry-James, who passed at birth. Predeceased by her parents, Henry and Clara Hersey, and her sisters, Christy (& Dean) and Dorothy (& Heinz). Loved and remembered by nieces and nephews, Peter & Brenda, Stephie and Victor, Ann and Bill, Christy and Brian, Peter Hart and the larger Hart family. Loved and remembered by her friends. The world was a better place with Jane in it. Jane’s family thanks her dear friend Anna Hemmendinger.

We also thank the skilled and compassionate nursing staff at both Grand River and Freeport Hospitals, Katie Garner, Drs. Froese, Trussler, Harlick, and Hinkewich.

A celebration of Jane’s life will take place in her garden in the spring when we will also share the dreams she helped us to imagine and realize.

“And I have become the child of the clouds, and of hope. I have become the friend of the enemy, whoever that is. I have become older, and cherishing what I have learned, I have become younger.” Mary Oliver, “To Begin with, the Sweet Grass”
