Obituary for J. Douglas Coleman

Coleman, J. Douglas:

Passed away peacefully at his home in the early hours of April 25, 2022 at the age of 94. He is reunited with his loving wife of over 66 years, Muriel Coleman, nee Wilkins, (2018) and is also predeceased by his son, James Richard (2019). Doug is survived by his daughter, Mary Elizabeth, sons, Douglas (Cheryl) and James (Rosemary) and grandchildren, Matthew (Sara), Timothy and James and great-grandchild, Max.

Growing up in Sarnia and Listowel as an only child, Doug came from a well-respected and large extended family. Even as a young man, he possessed the character of an honest and hard worker, holding several jobs to support his family though his high school days. He had the unique opportunity to attend Western University in London alongside his father who was sponsored through veteran's assistance after the war. Doug received a B.A Hon. in Economics and Political Science at Western, but it was there where he met the love of his life.

Doug and Muriel were connected through her mother who was running the boarding house where he was staying. With the help of some friends and a carefully placed invitation to dinner, they soon became a going concern. They were married in 1951 and established their home in London while he finished school. Doug was called to the bar in 1956 and practiced law in Fergus, Sarnia, and Waterloo, where he specialized in soliciting real estate, wills, and estates.

Doug and Muriel found themselves in Kitchener and their family grew as they adopted two children and had two of their own. He worked diligently, as he did his entire life, working for a number of different firms including his own, Brock and Coleman, until his retirement in 1994. Through the years, the family grew and faced their own ups and downs, challenges and victories. Through it all, Doug was a constant source of faith, hope and love in the family.

Douglas' family will receive relatives and friends from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM on Saturday, April 30th, 2022 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. A memorial service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Sunday, May 1, 2022 at 1:00 PM. Interment at Memory Gardens at a later date. Those who are unable to attend the service on Sunday are invited to join the family virtually at https://www.henrywalser.com/live-streaming.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to House of Friendship, The Working Centre or YW Kitchener-Waterloo - Mary's Place would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
