Obituary for Hans Winge

Winge, Hans

With deep sorrow, we announce the sudden passing of a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Hans passed away at home on Monday, July 31, 2023, at the age of 86. He was the beloved husband of Anne for over 58 years, a treasured Papa to Michael (Helen), Betty, and Richard, and a loving Opa to William (Kristin) and Anna (Cristian). He was the son of the late Hans and Maria Winge and the dearest brother of Hermann (Anni) and Elisabeth.

In 1962, driven by a sense of adventure and the hope to fulfill his life dreams, Hans immigrated to Canada from Westerholt, Germany as a young man. His pursuit of happiness gained new meaning upon meeting the love of his life and 'better half,' Anni, whom he married in 1965. Together, they built a loving family, creating countless beautiful memories with their children.

Professionally trained as a pastry chef in Germany, his entrepreneurial spirit took flight in 1970. Alongside his long-time business partner and dear friend, Christa Polgar, Hans established the Konditorei Café Mozart, a beloved destination in the region and beyond, for over 35 years.

Hans found joy in music, literature, nature, filmmaking, and cherished the company of loved ones. His passion for travel took him around the world, sharing adventures alongside his family and his dear friends, 'the Rasselbande.'

A man of gentleness, compassion, empathy, creativity, humour, wisdom, and affection, Hans leaves behind a legacy of love and will be profoundly missed.

Hans' family will receive relatives and friends from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener (519) 749-8467. Funeral Mass at St. Mary's RC Church, 56 Duke St. West, on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at 10 a.m. Interment at Woodland Cemetery. Reception to follow.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Waterloo Wellington or Hospice Waterloo Region would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
