Memories

First trip of the summer to the cottage always entailed hauling a trailer filled to the brim with our stuff. Our dog Laddie sat on the seat with us kids and when we finally turned off the highway onto the cottage road, he would cry and fuss and want out of the car to run the rest of the way. Dont know how he knew we were close, but he did. We have many great memories of summers spent at the cottage swimming, rowing boats, bonfires, going to the drug store in town Saturday night for the biggest ice cream cone This was all possible because of dad and his willingness to travel back and forth weekly to work and cut grass, look after a large garden, and grocery shop and return for the weekend. Many Friday nights the Schaaf & Schwindt kids would walk up the road to meet our Dads when they arrived. Things dad enjoyed at the cottage were sailing his skunk around the lake, bonfires, and reading in his chair outside facing the lake. We also had some loud rowdy volleyball games. Dad always helped in many diy projects with all of us kids. Many times Dad leant a hand at my home, two of which were to replace a hot water boiler furnace and then to help design a kitchen addition, purchase cupboards and then help install with the guidance of my uncle Clete. Couldnt have done it without them When we moved to Cobourg mom + dad made the trip many times to visit. I think dad still holds the record of the longest travel time to get there, 6+ hours due to a chemical spill on 401, being forced off 401 in Toronto and having no idea where they were or how to get where they wanted to go. Covid lockdown has been really tough. Dad was really missing his Sunday morning outings with Uncle Jack to church. He was also missing his family visits and even conversations at mealtime in the dining room. Being isolated hasnt been easy for any of us, but especially for those who live alone. Thanks Dad. Will miss you, but happy you are free from pain. Love Karen
