Obituary for David Robert Milne

Milne, David

David passed away peacefully, following a brief illness, at St. Mary's Hospital on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at the age of 70, 2 days before his 46th wedding anniversary. Beloved husband of Sandy (Alexandra) Milne (née Fischer). Loving father of Margaret Gwyn (Stephen), John Kintare (Cindy) and Andrew Milne (Andrea). Proud Grandpa of Edward, Mia, Aiden, and Ruth. Dear brother to Jennifer Robinson (Kent).

David died of endocarditis, but his untimely passage from death to new life feels like collateral damage of the pandemic. His medical caregivers were understandably distracted by symptoms that were similar to those of Covid-19. And his deteriorating mental health can only have accelerated his physical decline. The pandemic had David totally spooked. Zoom meetings and conference calls and Team Viewer helped. But the technology with which he was so adept was no substitute for people, in the flesh.

David had scheduled a mental health assessment for June 25th, the day he was finally diagnosed. He had been hoping for medication for anxiety and depression. If there’s one thing he could say to us today, it would be something like: “Attend to your mental health at least as closely as you do your physical. Do what you need to do to maintain it. Seek peace.”

The family hosted a vigil for David via Zoom on Thursday evening, July 2, at 8:30 p.m. David’s private funeral Mass, celebrated at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 3 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Kitchener, was live-streamed at www.henrywalser.com. Fr. Con O’Mahony presided, assisted by Fr. Raph Ma, CR. Plans are progressing for a public gathering to celebrate David at the end of June in 2021 or post-Covid, whichever comes last.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the House of Friendship (www.houseoffriendship.org) or the Working Centre (www.theworkingcentre.org) would be appreciated by the family.
