Grigaitis, Danuta:
Grigaitis, Danuta peacefully went into the heavenly arms of her much-loved God, her husband Gunter (2012), her grandson Colin (2005) and many cherished loved ones including her dear brother Richard Wilkans.
Mom leaves behind her special companion Siegfried Barta, her 3 children that she shared with her husband Adolf - Armin (Annemarie), Anita (Jamie), and Marita (Tim), 6 grandchildren - Alexandra (Ben), Alicia, Abraham (Matthias), Andrea (Ernesto), Joshua, and her “little boy” Brandon (Kayla), and finally 11 great-grandchildren - Sandra, Natalya, EJ, Na’liyah, Quincy, Lily, Avery, Charlie, Van, Reese, and Remy.
Mom was the most genuine, caring and loving person. Her family heard many stories over the years of war, survival, and perseverance. With the gracious sponsorship of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Kitchener, Mom arrived in Canada at the age of 17. After lengthy travels by boat, train and bus - she was dropped off at 2:00 a.m. in the town of Breslau alone, sitting on her suitcase and patiently waiting for her brother Richard to pick her up. From there she started her life in Canada as a nanny for a loving family who helped her to further her studies and to learn English. She worked in various retail positions over the years, as an Activity Director with several retirement homes, then finally as a seamstress for a bridal store before retiring. But retirement was the start of a whole new life - actively continuing her many dedicated years as a member of the St. Matthews Church Choir, the Concordia Club and Choirs, directing the Concordia Children’s choir, spending summers at the cottage with her husband Gunter at Belwood Lake, writing poetry, creating beautiful dried-flower cards, and entertaining many family members and friends with her singing, piano, and accordion playing.
At 91, Mom enjoyed a healthy long life, overcoming so many challenges and rising above them all.
Words can’t express how huge our loss is but we take comfort in knowing that she will continue caring for those who passed before her and being a guiding angelic light to those who mourn her loss.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. William Plaxton, Dr. Tian Yang Dai, the staff at The Villages of Winston Park, and the amazing Palliative Care Team at Grand River Hospital - Freeport Campus.
