Obituary for Catherine Frieda Knight Coles

COLES, CATHERINE FRIEDA KNIGHT (nee WATKIN) 1930 – 2020

Catherine passed away very peacefully on November 14 th , 2020 at Lanark Heights Long Term Care Home at the age of 90 years. Catherine was a caring and gentle soul who lived an exemplary Christian life.
Pre-deceased by her beloved husband Raymond Coles. Loving mother of Joanne, David, Stephen and Margaret (William Brezden). Cherished Grandmother of Eric, Heather (Corey) and Hannah (Holden) and Great-Grandmother of Noah, Tania, Hendric and Chester. Dear sister and pre-deceased by Fenwick (Dorothy) and Frederick (Ruth) Watkin.

Catherine was born on June 5th 1930 at the Toronto Grace Hospital. The daughter of Salvation Army Officers she was brought up to be a women of great faith. Growing up she lived in many Ontario small towns including Owen Sound, Bracebridge and Oshawa. One day as a young women sharing her beautiful voice singing in the Danforth Songersters, she was spotted by a young Canadian Soldier just home from the war. He knew right away that she would be his wife. In 1951 she married Raymond and they entered the Salvation Army Training College embarking on a life of Christian service travelling and living all over Canada. Four babies were born over the next several years all in different cities. Although life took them on many other career and spiritual paths they never wavered from their faith in God.

Cathy and Ray retired to Kitchener where they enjoyed being with family, grandchildren arriving, Sunday afternoon scrabble games, Tuesday rummy cube with good friends and a nice cup of tea out on the back deck overlooking their lovely garden.

The final years of Cathy’s life were spent in the care of Lanark Heights Long Term Care where in the final months the staff had to become her family as visits were restricted due to Covid. Her family would like to thank the caring staff who looked after her.

A private family ceremony will be held at a later date.
