Brian Croft

I flew with Bernie Reid at 439 Tiger Squadron at RCAF Station Baden–Soellingen, West Germany, in the mid 1970’s. I was a new fighter pilot and Bernie was an experienced fighter pilot who shared his knowledge and was a great teacher. Bernie was a natural leader, who delivered encouragement and wisdom in a light and humorous style as thus he contributed greatly to our comradeship, the essential glue that bound us together as a great tactical squadron. Bernie and his wife Ester were generous to me and my wife and our young children, welcoming us into their home and helping us in many ways and always injecting happiness and warmth into our lives. When I flew on Bernie's wing, I placed my life in his hands and when he flew on my wing the roles were reversed; there is no finer way to learn duty and trust. After the air force I carried on and took with me all of the things that I learned from Bernie; he was always there for me and always will be. Thanks Bernie! “Tiger 61” Brian Croft, Captain Retired, formerly of 439 Squadron
