Alex was born on March 11, 1920 in Fraserburgh, Scotland to Alexander and Lily (Watt) Tocher who both worked in the herring industry. He left school at age 14 to become a tool and die maker. In 1953 he emigrated to Canada and was a dedicated employee of Orenda Engines (AVRO Canada) until 1959 and then General Motors Oshawa until 1988. He was a practical and thrifty man, proud that he was able to provide a home, summer holidays and educational opportunities for all of his family.
Alex was an excellent ballroom dancer. You could find him most Fridays at the Harmony Club in Markham, still dancing into his 90s. He loved to dine out and considered chocolate to be a dietary staple. His car (GM only) was his best friend. He could fix his own car and almost anything else. He enjoyed reading newspapers cover to cover, movies - especially "My Cousin Vinny", Frank Sinatra and travelling regularly to Cuba. During his final hours, we played some of his favourite songs. To our surprise he began to sing along and then said, "People don't sing and dance enough."
Special thanks to his wonderful neighbours, loving WWMD caregivers, friend Helen and many professionals and community services. Alex's wish to remain at home was a feat accomplished with a lot of support. We are deeply grateful and touched by your kindness.
At Alex's request there will be no funeral or visitation.
In lieu of flowers, please reach out to someone in need.
Arrangements entrusted to Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467.
