Obituary for Allan Anderson Benson

BENSON, Allan Anderson
Aug 3, 1945 - April 26, 2019

Passed away peacefully after a brief stay at Lisaard House, surrounded by family. Allan is deeply cherished and missed by all his loved ones; Beloved husband to Marcella, loving father to his sons James, David and Peter (Dee) Benson, loving brother to his sister Carol (David) Cooke, and sister in laws, Elisebeth and Teena Procee and Maaike Lines, Uncle to nephews Michael (Alison) Cooke, Andrew (Jacqueline) Lines, Andy (Adinne) Roersma, and to his nieces Lisa (Corey) Palmer, Stacey (David) Stiff, and Minka (Stefan) Chambers. Loving Popsie to his very dear granddaughter Taylor and one granddaughter and one grandniece arriving soon, and his great nephews and nieces. There is a deep respect between the Benson and Quinn/Ernst families. As such they continue to share family gatherings with his sons’ mother Elizabeth (Gerry) Quinn, his brother in laws David (Wendy) Ernst, Richard (Christine) Ernst, Peter (Sheila) Ernst, and their children and grandchildren, who will miss Allan greatly.

Born in St. John's Newfoundland to Roy and Edna Benson, Allan grew up in The Beaches, Toronto. Allan went to school at Malvern Collegiate and Monark Park. He played football and basketball in high school and was involved in many social activities. Allan studied accounting and became a CPA at Ryerson Polytechnic Institute where he was on the basketball team. His first employer was Price Waterhouse in Toronto. As a CPA he quickly earned a reputation as an ethical and dedicated professional. Allan and his family moved to Kitchener-Waterloo and he became a Partner with Clarke, Starke and Diegel Accounting firm, where he remained until he retired in 2009. He was a Lecturer in the Business/Finance Accounting Department at Wilfred Laurier University for 30 plus years, where he continued to teach well past his retirement from Clarke, Starke and Diegel. Highly respected and admired by his students whose successes he facilitated, his influence will most certainly live on in them. A mentor to many in the business, sports and academic worlds, he helped numerous people succeed in life.

Allan was involved with the Kitchener Rangers for many years and was a Scout for both the NHL and OHL. He also taught and volunteered at Chicopee Ski Club. Many of his hobbies encompassed his love of the outdoors and the beauty of nature. He especially enjoyed time at Georgian Bay. Over the years he enjoyed many diverse activities which he was quick to share with his family and friends including waterskiing, football, baseball, hockey, go karting and going to concerts. In more recent years, one of his greatest past times involved the love of music and especially finger style guitar playing. Allan will be greatly missed by his friends, neighbours, colleagues, business associates, and students.

Allan met the love of his life Marci, poolside within weeks of him moving into his new condominium home in Kitchener. They began to date soon after that first meeting. They have been inseparable best friends. They loved, lived, played, traveled and laughed together, enjoying each other's company no matter where they were or what they were doing. Being with each other was being "home".

Allan loved to try new things! He was always planning activities for them to try out. Their closest friends knew him and Marci as the "Hobby Couple" because they did most activities together: skiing, sailing, motorcycling, woodworking, ballroom dancing, concerts and much more.

Allan was a dedicated family man and a loyal friend, kind, thoughtful, and generous. He had a strength about him and a wonderful sensitive heart, steadfast and true. Allan's sons James, David and Peter meant the world to him. He enjoyed taking them skiing and on outings and he truly enjoyed simply being with them at home. As they matured, he found great pleasure listening to them and mentoring them. He provided them with quiet and steady guidance and was extremely proud of each one of them and of what wonderful men they’ve become.

Allan was SO appreciative of all the care he received from his wife, his sons, his sister and brother in law, family and friends, doctors and nurses; all who worked so hard to make his wish come true to be at home as long as possible. To his doctor and caregivers at Lisaard House, thank you for your kind support of Allan and for how you also supported our whole family, which meant so much to us. Marci, James, David and Peter would especially like to express their deepest gratitude to Uncle Dave and Aunt Carol Cooke for coming to Kitchener from their home in Kingston, Ontario to provide the necessary support and nursing care, so Allan could be home in his final weeks. You were truly amazing!

A Celebration of Allan's life, will be held May 9th, 2019 from 3-7 p.m. at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener, ON.
