Obituary for David Charles Rainham

David Charles Rainham
Dr. David C. Rainham
1945-2015

David C. Rainham was a loving husband, devoted father, caring family physician and a 'bon vivant'. He died unexpectedly from heart failure on his way to care for a patient at Pinehaven Nursing Home on October 16, 2015. Born in India at the end of WWII and raised in the United Kingdom, Dave moved to Canada after finishing his medical training in Cardiff, Wales. Much of his family life and career was centered in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, where he practiced family medicine for more than 40 years. Dave's presence was larger than life and he forged many strong relationships with his colleagues and partners in health care. He would do most anything for his patients.

Dave will be fondly remembered for his passion for music, particularly the piano. When not playing rugby, sailing on Lake Huron or reading books about popular theoretical cosmology, you would find Dave playing a Beethoven sonata on the piano or practicing a Barbershop chorus for a recital. Dave had an indomitable spirit and would rise to any challenge, especially in recreational arts of table tennis, darts, or a game of billiards. Sometimes his children would let him win.

Nothing was more important to Dave than family. Dave is survived by his wife Joyce, with whom he spent twenty-eight loving years; his four children, Stephanie, Chris, Sion (Dawn) and Daniel (Tarah); his three grand-children, Marcus, Lilly and Wyatt; his sister Noreen Winter (Mervin); sister-in-law June Kirk (Doug); father-in-law Harry Holley; and, nephews Matthew (Sarah), Jonathan (Karen), and Paul (Janelle). He was a loving, caring and devoted partner, father and mentor. He will be profoundly and deeply missed. Cremation has taken place.

When you see a beautiful sunset over the water, raise a glass to toast Dave.

A celebration of Dave's life will be held between 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St, Kitchener, (518-749-8467). Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to The Family and Children's Services Foundation (www.facswaterloo.org) or call (519) 576-0540.
