Obituary for Fred Mendler

Fred Mendler
Fred (Ferdinand) Mendler
Passed away in the early evening of February 11, 2018 from brain trauma after a two-week struggle while vacationing in Cuba. Fred was married to the love of his life Betty (nee Simon) for fifty-six years. He was Father and friend to David (Jennifer), Eddy (Jenny), and Danny (Rose); proud Opa to Theresa (Thirstan), Joann (Tom), Nick, Niomi (Nick), Adam (Robyn), Candace, and Brandon (Alyssa); as well as a loving and affectionate Opi to his great-grandchildren Effi and William. He was survived by his sister Eva Laszlo (Joe) and sister-in-law Judy Nickl as well as many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents as well as his siblings Victoria and Peter. Fred was proud of every member of his family especially the growing fourth generation.

Fred and his family celebrated his eightieth birthday in December 2017. He was born in Nemesnadudvar Hungary in 1937 and was displaced with his family to Germany after the Second World War. Incredibly, Fred escaped East Germany on foot and by railcar under nightfall to avoid deportation to a work camp. His family was reunited when everyone immigrated to Canada after 1953. Here they started a new life in tobacco country and soon Fred fell in love with Betty.

Fred loved to work and did so until he retired at seventy-two. He started his electrical trade as a young man in Ulm, Germany and spent most of his life working as an electrician at D & M Electric, Conestogo Electric, Lindeman, D & D Controls, as well as Mendler Electric.

Fred was a proud and active member of the German-Canadian Hunting and Fishing Club for over 50 years. He loved hunting and fishing with his sons, as well as his many friends, and spent the summers in Honey Harbour. He loved to travel and visit his second family in Cuba. In recent years, Fred could be found outdoors: relaxing on the porch, on morning walks, gardening (lately with his great-grand daughter Effi, the sparkle in his eye, each and every Monday), and maintaining the grounds at the Club with his friends.

A celebration of Fred’s life will take place at 2pm on Wednesday February 14, 2018. The family invites his many friends to the German Canadian Hunting and Fishing Club in Mannheim between 2:00-5:00pm. Memories will be shared at 3pm. Cremation has taken place.

The family would like to thank the compassionate care Fred received by numerous medical professionals in Cuba, Canada and in-between, especially the neuro team at the hospital in Bayamo, Cuba. The family sends love to all of Fred and Betty’s “Cuban Family”, especially Megalis, for standing by both of them during this difficult time. Also, the family gives special thanks to Dr. Stephen MacGregor and Anita for their years of care.
Donations in his memory may be made, to the Arthritis Society or a charity of choice, through the Henry Walser Funeral Home. 519-749-8467.
