Obituary for Doris (Mank) Enright

Doris (Mank) Enright
Enright, Doris:
With peace and grace, and with her son and daughter on either side, Doris passed from this world to be with her Lord, on February 2, 2018, in her 91st year.

Doris was predeceased by Charles Enright (Chuck) in 2016, her husband of 68 years. Also predeceased by her parents Ina and David Mank, sisters May (Enright) and Betty (Simpson) and brothers David and William (Bill).

Much loved mother of Debs (Jim Peluch) and Jeff. Beloved and devoted Grandma to Denais, Wesley and Anna, and dear Aunt Doris to many nieces and nephews.

Doris created a home of beauty, art, and music, and welcomed everyone with a kind smile and warm embrace. She was also a lifelong advocate of women's rights and education.

In school, Doris excelled in math, art, and music, and although she was unable to pursue her dream of being an architect due to the times she lived in, forged a career in the financial sector. She worked in Toronto for the federal government in their commercial tax department, and as an auditor's assistant in accounting firms. After raising children, she returned to the workforce, retiring in 1992 after many years as Manager of Budd Automotive Credit Union.

Art and music figured prominently through Doris' life. With near perfect pitch, she taught herself to play the piano by ear, and was in demand at parties, able to play any requested song. She also volunteered at senior's centres to play at weekly sing-alongs. Having a natural talent for art, she sketched and painted throughout her life. Often given to friends and family as gifts, she also has some of her work hanging in corporate offices in Toronto.

In her Streetsville and Kitchener neighbourhoods, she quickly became known as “The Fudge Lady”, where for over 50 years, her homemade fudge was the talk of Hallowe’en trick-or-treaters, young and old alike. It was not uncommon for former neighbourhood children who had moved away, to return years later as adults, driving their own kids to the house so they too, could enjoy the same experience. Many would come to the door, recount their childhood memories and thank Doris for her efforts. Doris and Chuck's neighbourhood friends often showed up unannounced on Hallowe’en for their annual fudge fix. In 2008, the last year she made fudge, everyone who came to the house received a "thanks for the memories" note from Doris, along with the recipe wrapped up with each piece handed out.

Doris loved spending time at the family cottage in Lakeside next door to her son, daughter, son-in-law, and her beloved grandchildren. She enjoyed watching all the activities around the lake from her chair on the deck, and was genuinely interested to know what was going on in the lives of any of the younger generations who dropped by to say hello.

Doris was a quiet and steadfast Christian throughout her life. She lived and acknowledged her faith daily, firmly believing that to those whom more is given, more is expected. She tithed to her church and charities, and assisted friends in need.

Doris' family will receive relatives and friends from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467, visitation will continue on Saturday, March 10, 2018 from 2-2:45 p.m. A service will take place in the chapel at 3 p.m. Reception to follow. Interment Bridgeport Cemetery at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, donations to Sleeping Children Around the World would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).

Finally, our family would be remiss if we didn’t thank an incredibly helpful and considerate man, Henry Walser, for his gift of comfort and understanding always bestowed upon our family. Henry, you are a true professional and the epitome of compassion, care and service to others. Thank you.

Visit for Doris' memorial.
