John Donald Lumby
Lumby, John Donald
Passed away peacefully, with his wife by his side, on Friday, November 3rd, 2017 at Chartwell Elmira Long Term Care Residence at the age of 86. Beloved husband of Helen, loving Dad to Jeff (Julie), Lisa (Tom), and John Jr. (Julia), and cherished Papa to Charlie, Max, Lewis, Parker, and Cassia. He is also survived by his Uncle Tom Lumby, and his cousins Peter, Geoffrey and Quinn. John was predeceased by his parents Don and Alice, and his sister, Mary.

The family wishes to offer their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff and residents at Chartwell Elmira for their kind, compassionate, and dedicated care of John.

John was born in Saskatoon, Sk, December 19, 1930. He joined the Saskatoon Star Phoenix newspaper as a photographer then moved on to CFQC-TV as Director of Cinematography where he covered major events. He and his wife, Helen, then formed their own company, Lumby Productions Limited, and worked hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Natural Resources to produce many award-winning documentaries focused on the forest industry in Canada. John also worked closely with the CBC providing coverage of significant stories. His skill as a cinematographer was heralded by all who engaged him. He had a unique style and was fearless in dangerous situations. He shot amazing aerials from fire-bombers and helicopters in forest country. His children were involved in his work throughout his life and he loved them dearly. John and family embarked on a different path when they produced children's TV programs Size Small, Size Small Country, and Size Small Island with the Global Television Network. The three series of 158 shows were shown on television stations across Canada and on PBS in the USA. John's legacy includes remarkable nature shots of birds, animals, forests, lakes, and rivers. He loved his work and was totally committed to excellence always. In his final years, John bravely faced Parkinson’s disease without a complaint. He is lovingly remembered by his close family and friends. John was always grateful for his life and was happiest when everyone around him was happy. Let's celebrate his wonderful life with smiles and love the way he wished. Private cremation has taken place.

...And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever
