Obituary for David Leonard Phillips

David Leonard Phillips
PHILLIPS, DAVID (DAVE) LEONARD (January 8, 1984 – October 29, 2017)
It is with deep sorrow that we announce our David’s tragic death on October 29, 2017 after a long difficult battle with schizophrenia. David was the very, very much loved son of Teresa Goodin (Robert Zinger) and George Phillips. Sweet and beloved friend and brother to Rhonda Thompson (Jim Thompson), Jillian Holmes (George Holmes) and Beth Phillips (Tracy Whelan). Charming, kind and brilliant, he was so loved by family and will be greatly missed by his nieces Julia, Sarah, Molly and Zoe. David will forever be remembered for his gentle soul and hilarious wit. He loved his family, friends and all he met immediately and with ease. Inquisitive and thoughtful, sweet and kind with a deep soft, gentle voice, he loved conversation and left a positive lasting impression on everyone he met throughout his life. There was never a video game that David could not master nor a technical problem he could not figure out, having mastered reading computer tech magazines at the age of 4. David attended French Immersion in school and he could speak French fluently and often dreamed in French. We will always remember his funny impression of a Scottsman speaking French. David was a great friend, brother and uncle who generously shared his clever sense of humour and his love. His friends were very important to him as he grew up. He touched so many. We want to thank our incredible families, our amazing friends, Lisa Appleby, the staff at CMHA and the staff at Grand River Hospital’s psychiatric unit. Also thank you to the House of Friendship who sheltered him during some of his most difficult times. In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA - Waterloo, Wellington, Dufferin) and the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario (cards available at the funeral home). Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to honour and remember Dave’s all too short life will be held at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener, (519) 749-8467 on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. Reception to follow.
