The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of John Downey can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

High school 1971-1974. St. Davids

After our family moved from Toronto I was faced with the challenge of being 14 and at the end of my grade 8 year. What a funny school being that it was grade 7 to 10. There are way too many memories to share in this space but suffice it to say that Mr. Downie demanded and deserved the respect he received. He will be missed and not soon forgotten. One afternoon during our intramural hockey final game I thought I had scored the winning goal. Mr. Diwnie called the goal off to which I responded by shooting the puck near him in protest. This was followed by a "Backewich" I will see you in my office tomorrow morning at 8:00. Needless to say it was punishment enough enduring the hours ahead until our meeting. The morning of wreckening came and went with a raised eyebrow and a stern message from our beloved VP. Lesson learned! Goodbye Sir! Until we meet again.
