Life Story for John Mellor

Passed away after a long, painful battle with cancer on January 12th, 2007 at the age of 84.

Deeply loved husband of Pamela Mellor with whom he shared 53 wonderful adventurous years of marriage. Loving and proud father of John (Sharan) Mellor, Philip (Mary Lou) Mellor, and Monica Mellor all of Kitchener and Denise (Cecil) Mellor of Calgary, AB. Much loved grandpa of Kristina, Kaitlyn, Sara, Jefferson, Shawn and Merry Kay and proud great grandpa.

Sadly missed by his brothers Arthur and Eric Mellor of Widnes, England.

John entered WWII in 1940 and attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the British Royal Navy. In 1943 he transferred to the British Commandos, fighting at Dieppe, D-Day and in Africa. Eventually in 1945 he was taken prisoner by the Japanese. John left the navy in 1953 after meeting and marrying the love of his life, Pamela and immigrated
to Canada. John worked as an engineer at CBC and the OWRC and as a high school teacher in Wallaceburg and later Grand River High School in Kitchener. John gained his MA at WLU at age 65 despite the onset of blindness. In 1975 he published his first book, Forgotten Heroes, The Canadians at Dieppe which was awarded the Canadian Non-Fiction Award. His second book The Company Store, hit the NY Times Best Seller List. John spent many years fighting for the pension rights of Canada's veterans and was appointed to the Canadian Committee for the History of the Second World War.

John's family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener 519-749-8467. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, January 17th from 10 a.m. until the time of John's funeral service at 11 a.m. in the chapel at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Williamsburg Cemetery in Kitchener.

In lieu of flowers donations to The Canadian Cancer Society or the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family (card's available at the funeral home).
